Distance Learner Support Service – changes to services from 1st July 2010
In order to comply with copyright law in relation to the supply of materials to distance learning students, we are revising the way we supply copies of articles and chapters of items we have in our stock that are requested from the Distance Learner Support Service (DLSS). We are no longer able to scan and provide pdf files of items we have in our collection. The following procedures will be introduced from 1st July 2010.
UK and Ireland based students – we will despatch photocopies of the material requested by post.
Overseas based students – these requests will be forwarded to our Document Supply team who will make a request to the British Library and items will be electronically delivered. (The British Library uses a legally compliant system that we don’t have access to).
There will be no change to the way that students make their requests and the procedure for this is described on the DLSS pages (http://students.shu.ac.uk/lits/services/distance/journal.html - which will be updated).
The above change will inevitably mean a slight delay will be experienced by both overseas and UK/Ireland students in receiving their material. The £1 supply charge will be applied to all DL students for each request as before.
We regret the need to change our system but our advice is that to remain compliant with copyright law this is essential.
If you have any questions or concerns please get in touch via DL.Support@shu.ac.uk
