Changes to Distance Learner Support Service

Distance Learner Support Service – changes to services from 1st July 2010

In order to comply with copyright law in relation to the supply of materials to distance learning students, we are revising the way we supply copies of articles and chapters of items we have in our stock that are requested from the Distance Learner Support Service (DLSS). We are no longer able to scan and provide pdf files of items we have in our collection. The following procedures will be introduced from 1st July 2010.

UK and Ireland based students – we will despatch photocopies of the material requested by post.

Overseas based students – these requests will be forwarded to our Document Supply team who will make a request to the British Library and items will be electronically delivered. (The British Library uses a legally compliant system that we don’t have access to).

There will be no change to the way that students make their requests and the procedure for this is described on the DLSS pages (http://students.shu.ac.uk/lits/services/distance/journal.html - which will be updated).

The above change will inevitably mean a slight delay will be experienced by both overseas and UK/Ireland students in receiving their material. The £1 supply charge will be applied to all DL students for each request as before.

We regret the need to change our system but our advice is that to remain compliant with copyright law this is essential.

If you have any questions or concerns please get in touch via DL.Support@shu.ac.uk

Redevelopment of Learning Centres

As part of the redevelopment of Level 4, the Adsetts centre is getting a new Helpdesk. It will be situated close to where the current Helpdesk is, so your information, circulation and IT needs will still be catered for on Level 4. A sneak preview of the plans for the new desk is on the right, click for larger image. They still might change, but the general shape will stay the same.

In order to make room to build the new Helpdesk, we need to create a temporary desk where we can handle all of your enquiries. Therefore, from Wednesday 2 June 2010 you will find the temporary Helpdesk on Level 4 of the Adsetts Centre. It’ll be based in the Social Learning Space, outside room 6443.

The move of the Helpdesk will mean that we need to close bookable rooms 6515 and 6443, but all other rooms should remain bookable. We’ve also pushed back the start date of the project to ensure that there is minimal disruption during the exam period.

Pilot roving support in Learning Centres

In response to feedback, the Helpdesk is operating a pilot scheme in learning centres to offer you help and support where you are working.

This is the first phase of a trial and will help us in planning our service developments. During the trial, the Helpdesk service will continue to operate as usual from Level 4 of Adsetts and the entrance of Collegiate Crescent.
