LTA Conference 2009

We hope you all enjoyed this year's SBS LTA Conference! For those of you unable to attend, the theme for the 2009 conference was student engagement.

Throughout the day the LIS team were on hand to talk to delegates and promote all the work we have been doing in the area of student engagement. Key areas to highlight include:

Student Engagement in Teaching - Flying Start Workshops

To improve interactivity and student engagement in our information skills classes we introduced a new exercise to our Flying Start workshops. The exercise asked students to reflect on their information seeking behaviour and identify which of seven animal typologies and corresponding behaviours they most closely identified with. Animals to choose from included squirrels, ostriches, cuckoos and even vultures and magpies! The activity was then followed up by a discussion of the benefits and pitfalls of each type to reinforce best practices for academic work.

We are pleased to report that we received excellent student feedback for the workshop and the team are currently working to develop this and our other information skills classes ready for the 2009/10 session.

Interactive Resources - the Finding Information Map

This year the team have worked hard to support and engage distance learner students through the creation of a 'Finding information map'. Hosted in Blackboard, the map is a fun and engaging interactive resource that is designed to support the development of information skills, covering key areas such as how to plan a search, where to look for information and evaluation and referencing skills.

The information maps showcased at the conference were designed specifically for distance learner students on hospitality and MBA programmes but can be easily adapted for different levels and course programmes. Please get in touch if you are interested in finding out more!

Information Literacy Framework

This year LIS have been developing an information literacy framework to bring a strategic approach to enhancing learning and academic achievement through the acquisition of information skills.

The framework is currently still under development but we hope to have the opportunity to discuss the framework with all faculty staff in the very near future.

If you are interested in finding out more about any of these initiatives please get in touch with your Information Adviser.
